Pack the documents before you pack the soft bag
A Zona Río dental day trip fails more often on missing ID or a blurry address than on the chair. This is a packing checklist for San Ysidro / Otay → Olive — not legal advice, not a guarantee of wait times, and not a SENTRI sales pitch.
What to carry for the US return (WHTI reality)
For a same-day return on foot or in a car, treat Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative rules as the baseline. In plain language for most US citizens:
- US passport book — the least ambiguous choice for a pedestrian crossing.
- US passport card — card format; still a passport document for land/sea.
- Enhanced driver’s license / enhanced ID from a participating state — land/sea only where accepted; not a stand-in for air travel.
- A plain state driver’s license alone is usually not enough to re-enter the US after Mexico. Do not invent exceptions on the day of the visit.
We will not claim which officer will smile at which document. If your situation is dual citizenship, a minor traveling without both parents, or a green-card holder, confirm your document set with official sources before you leave home. This page is a packing list, not an immigration consult.
Minors and companions
If a child is coming for consult or treatment:
- Carry the child’s passport (or other accepted return document) — not just the parent’s.
- Bring a printed note of who has permission to authorize dental care that day.
- Keep the clinic appointment confirmation with the child’s name matching the ID.
- Ask Olive in advance whether a second adult must stay in the waiting room for consent paperwork.
Do not assume “they know us from last year” replaces paper.
Clinic paper you should not leave to memory
Print or screenshot before you lose signal at the port:
- Appointment time and patient name.
- Full Olive address: Blvd. Agua Caliente 4558-Interior C1-32B, Zona Urbana Río Tijuana, 22020 Tijuana, B.C.
- Clinic phone: +1 (928) 264-6204.
- Any written prep notes they emailed (fasting, meds list, soft-food start).
- A second copy in your phone and a paper fold in your wallet.
Ride drivers and reception both need the street line — “Zona Río” alone is not a pin. Crossing skeleton: San Ysidro / Otay → Olive. Port choice: San Ysidro vs Otay.
Digital + paper copies (do both)
- Passport bio page photo in a locked phone album and a paper photocopy in a separate pocket.
- Appointment PDF offline (downloaded, not only in email).
- US dentist records on a USB and a portal screenshot if you already gathered X-rays (see the records post when that is your next step).
- Emergency contact who stays north of the border and knows your clinic phone.
Phone battery dies. Apps fail at the exit. Paper still works.
Wallet, phone, and payment readiness
- Confirm your phone plan / roaming works in Tijuana before you cross — or carry a screenshot of the offline map to Olive.
- Bring a payment method the clinic already confirmed in writing for deposits. Do not invent which cards “always” work.
- Keep backup cash for a taxi if the ride app stalls after a long chair time — still agree the destination before you sit.
- Leave spare cards you do not need at home; carry what you will actually use.
SENTRI / Global Entry — optional speed, not a dental ticket
Trusted-traveler programs can shorten some vehicle or airport lines when you qualify and the lane is open. They are not required for a dental day trip. Pedestrian medical “email passes” are easy to invent online — we do not. If you drive, read FastLane vs pedestrian so you do not confuse car lanes with walk-then-ride. If you walk, your document set and buffer time matter more than a sticker on the windshield.
Day-shape reminder (docs meet calendar)
Documents get you across. The written plan still decides whether the clinical day fits a single crossing. Pair this pack list with the Zona Río day plan and ask Olive, before you book surgery, whether consult-only or treatment-plus-return is the honest shape.
